jonwilok, finally, I have built everything from CSSU git that makes sense to build and that will compile on my dev VM, now to figure out what to do with all these debs and which ones I should install :)04:38
jonwilOr maybe I will just go ahead and install CSSU properly :P04:39

jonwilTime to install CSSU :)05:17
jonwilThis is taking longer than I thought :P06:10
jonwilFinally, I am now running CSSU I hope :)06:37
jonwilYeah CSSU is great07:00
jonwilMuch better than running some random set of self-built packages'07:01
jonwilNow I need to update to CSSU-devel and then update a few packages on top of that07:01
jonwilI want to live on the bleeding edge of N900 development (and possibly beyond that in some cases :P07:01

jonwilI think I might have found that rare case where a N900 is screwed beyond being fixable. Something somehow in the process of installing cssu or something has caused my phone to go into a bootloop (the kind that even backupmenu cant get past). That alone I can fix. But now my USB port wont work at all and I cant talk to the phone via flasher.10:38
jonwilThat second thing means I am screwed10:38
KotCzarnywhatever you did, as long battery and usb is physically ok, you should be able to boot rescueos10:39
KotCzarnyso check your battery maybe?10:39
jonwilNote "USB port wont work at all"10:39
KotCzarnyso, you broke the port?10:39
jonwili.e. flasher-3.5 wont see the phone10:39
*** eMHa has joined #maemo10:39
jonwilThese things are weak and it probably finally had one too many replugs10:40
KotCzarnyho hum10:40
jonwilWhen I plug in the data cable from my PC into my N900, it comes up with a Nokia logo on a dark screen with a USB sign in the corner for about 5 seconds10:40
Wizzupthat indicates that usb works though10:40
jonwilless than 5 seconds actually10:40
jonwilthen that logo goes away10:40
Wizzuphm.10:40
jonwiland it bootloops10:40
KotCzarnycan you try bootloop-low-battery-fix ?10:40
Wizzupit might be fixable with some soldering skills still, if it is the usb port10:40
jonwil~bootloop-low-battery-fix10:41
jonwilWhat's bootloop-low-battery-fix?10:41
jonwilI dont have soldering skills or the tools to solder10:42
jonwiland I dont know anyone I can go visit who does have the tools/skills for soldering10:42
KotCzarnyjust charge the battery somehow10:42
KotCzarnyafair once it's under 30% or something flasher wont see the device10:43
jonwilI have no way to charge the battery10:43
*** geaaru has joined #maemo10:43
jonwilAlthough everything I know says there is juice in at least one of the 2 batteries I have here in front of me10:45
jonwilMy gut says its one of those cases where some pins of the USB port aren't making contact and others are10:45
jonwilHence the brief USB logo10:45
KotCzarnydid you try flasher on both?10:45
jonwilyep, neither one gets it to recognize10:46
jonwilmy gut is telling me my USB port is busted and I am screwed10:46
jonwileven if I could charge the battery to 100% (or get one that was charged to 100%) I dont think it would get this thing to be recognized by flasher10:47
jonwilI have no clue what the hell to do now10:47
KotCzarnyget cheap device with broken lcd? :)10:48
Wizzuporder another n900, or a n900 battery charger10:48
jonwilI dont think the battery will help10:48
jonwilI think I need a new N90010:48
jonwilone with a USB port that isn't stuffed10:48
jonwiltrust me when I say no amount of battery juice is likely to get this phone going again10:49
jonwiland of course I have a backupmenu backup but its sitting on my EMMC since I dont have a microsd10:49
jonwilI am fairly sure I am 100% screwed10:50
Wizzupyou can try to gently push the cable a bit and see if it makes contact then. then it might be fixable still.10:51
Wizzup(with a steady hand and soldering iron)10:51
jonwilTried that several times, no juice10:51
jonwilI dont have a soldering iron, a steady hand or the tools to take apart a N90010:52
jonwilI am fairly sure I am screwed10:52
jonwilat this point10:52
jonwilunless I can find someone in Brisbane, Australia that can do the kind of deep board level repair work likely to be necessary to fix this10:52
jonwiland in the short term I have no phone at all10:53
jonwiland no way for important people to get in touch with me whilst I figure this out10:53
jonwilI think the best next step is to buy the cheapest possible phone so I can talk to people again10:54
jonwiland then from there figure out what to do with my precious N90010:54
KotCzarnyused phones are often offered for free on classifieds sites10:56
KotCzarnyie. local sell/buy/give away for free boards10:56
*** jskarvad has joined #maemo10:57
jonwilThat sort of stuff doesn't happen so much in Australia because of the "we buy any phone no matter how old" type mobs that give maybe $5 for even the crappiest of phones (and the big recycling effort where people dispose of their phones in an e-waste recycling bin)11:00
KotCzarnyo.O11:01

jonwilright now though I will head out to the nearest payphone and phone some people who will get very worried if they cant contact me11:05
jonwilsince otherwise they might think I am in real trouble11:05
Wizzupjonwil: I can usually get a n900 for 50 euros around here11:08
Wizzupif you want I can do that and send one your way. have to check shipping.11:08
KotCzarnyoh wow, letter up to 350g to australia is ~4usd11:13
KotCzarnyup to 500g is ~10usd11:13
KotCzarnyjonwil, i can try to get device with broken screen cheap here and send you11:14

jonwil$70 later I have a cheap crap phone that is covered in Google, LG and Vodafone logos and that has successfully connected to TPG (my network is a Vodafone MVNO hence why I went for a Vodafone phone) so at least I can contact the people that I need to contact.12:03
jonwilOr rather I have done that12:03
jonwillet the family know I am ok and what has happened12:03
jonwilSo that's got the immediate need for a device that can act as a phone sorted12:03
jonwilNow I can take a bit of time to figure out whether I go for a repair of my current phone somehow, a new-to-me N900 or something else.12:05

mike727Anyone here from Melbourne? There is this ambiguous ad, *might* be worth looking at   gumtree.com.au/s-ad/116211365014:49
mike727Heck, I bought my first N900 from asking, "Anyone want to sell me their Nokia N900?", on the Australian (reddit?) IRC channel.14:51
jonwilI haven't decided what I am going to do yet. Its entirely possible there is some way I can get the USB port on my N900 replaced somehow and get my own phone back again.14:55
jonwilIn fact I am sure its probably fixable since there are thousands of posts on TMO about people who had broken USB ports but dont anymore. Its just a question of whether someone who has the skills to fix it exists in a location where they would be useful to me...15:01
jonwiland how much fixing it would cost15:02

jonwilIts not just the experience, I dont have any of the tools required to do it17:32
KotCzarnysend it to sicelo17:32
KotCzarny;)17:32
jonwilAnd I suspect getting the tools for fine SMD soldering work (and all the other things required to make it happen) wouldn't be cheap.17:32
KotCzarnyi think he did it without17:35
jonwilI would need either skills I dont have, tools I dont have or both in order to try and fix my N90017:40
jonwilunforuntely17:40
jonwiland that's not me underestimating my capabilities17:40
jonwilI definitely need a soldering iron (even the cheapest suitable one would be expensive)17:40
jonwiland I need some tiny screwdrivers for the tiny screws17:40
