* enyc meeps14:04
* enyc never fully understood maemo updates -- "apt-get upgrade" seems to be safe, "apt-get dist-upgrade" is not, generally, seems to want to do zillions of removals and so on, wondered whats going on there??14:05
bencohI'd say man apt-get for details on the difference between upgrade and dist-upgrade :)14:11
enycwell yes, upgrade only upgrades existing packgas wihtout allowing installations/removals14:15
enycbut I'm asking about maemo+ssu  situation -- is it normal that  'dist-upgrade'  wants to change lots and break stuff?14:16
*** Pali has joined #maemo-ssu14:18
DocScrutinizer05yes, since maemo is one huge metapackage14:38
*** M4rtinK has joined #maemo-ssu14:39
*** LauRoman has joined #maemo-ssu15:27
*** arcean has joined #maemo-ssu17:30
enycDocScrutinizer05: I don't 010% get that though... current state is that  apt-get dist-upgrade  would want to  "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 287 to remove and 0 not upgraded."17:44
DocScrutinizer05I can't help with analysis _why_ and _what_ goes awry when you do apt-get (dist)upgrade. I just know that with maemo it doesn't work the way you'd hope for17:52
DocScrutinizer05there are no proper dependencies maintained in maemo, it's one huge metapackage17:54
enycI get ''no proper dependencies''18:00
enyc'one huge metapackage'' suggests i should find a package like 'maemo' that depends on loads of things18:00
keriohm, lots of stuff in -devel18:14
kerioor maybe it's stuff in -testing18:14
enychrrom, somethinc  like pinning deselcting all that stuff or somesuch?18:20
keriohonestly maemo needs pretty much a rebuild from the current debian or something18:22
kerioit's too hard to figure out how things *were* supposed to be like18:22
kerionow that so much time has passed18:22
enyckk18:24
enycits based on a particular debian past version?18:25
drathirkerio: migration to alarm will be great... but closed things sadly...18:29
drathirkerio: but really amazing job is all time done keep it up2date as much as possible...18:30
enyc=)18:32
Palireason is that dist-upgrade try to install some defaul debian packages (like baseutils, etc)20:28
Palibut maemo uses busybox, not gnu utils20:29
Paliand there are dependences which will replaces/remove busybox packages20:29
Palibut maemo metapackage depends on busybox and so as reverse dependency is not OK, dist-upgrade will try to remove maemo metapackage20:30
Paliand so after that there will be couple of auto packages which are not needed anymore, so they are going to be removed too20:30
PaliI would say, this is bug in dist-upgrade algorithm20:31
Palianyway, you can use aptitude upgrade which should work fine20:31
enycPali: hrrm mine doesn't have aptitude!21:17
Paliit is in extras-devel21:17
enychow problematic is extras-devel?  see lots of 'not ready for users' warnings and not sure if there are mohulitple apt lines for it etc etc21:33
* Sicelo has extras-devel always enabled. no issues. but i do take some reasonable care myself .. ymmv21:40
DocScrutinizer05extras-devel is de3finitely a nogo with apt-get upgrade21:42
DocScrutinizer05several packages have a working version in extras and a newer broken version in extras-devel21:43
DocScrutinizer05there might even be packages in extras-devel that would replace core libs from Nokia repos21:43
DocScrutinizer05which usually doesn't pan out21:44
Siceloagreed. :)21:44
Siceloexcept i look what apt-get upgrade is trying to do, before choosing "yes" .. the windowsy habit of clicling Yes/Next/OK is absolutely bad21:45
DocScrutinizer05you not only need to check, you also need to know21:46
