* brolin_empey has a new toy: an HP 2133 Mini-Note subnotebook computer from 2008 with an 80686-class VIA C7 CPU, a 2.5-inch SATA HDD, and, unfortunately, a fan. It is one of the few x86 computers I have with a CPU not from Intel nor AMD, though.09:41

totalizatorthat's why I love my old 386/486 era laptops - no fans, no problem09:58
totalizatorand I have a lovely Sony Vaio wit K6-2 533MHz that I find unusable because of loud, noisy fan09:58
KotCzarnymy x40 has a fan, but only turns on when full load in stupid websites09:59
KotCzarnyotherwise idles ~40-45C range09:59
totalizatorlike my Celeron 1,5GHz powered Toshiba A50 - it has a fan but 95% of the time it remains dead silent when not under haevy load10:01
totalizatorit has also a grat software for controlling the cooling behavior10:02
KotCzarnyi just wrote a simple shell script to turn fan on/off depending on temp/hysteresis10:03
KotCzarny;)10:03
*** Venemo has joined #maemo10:03
totalizatoropposite to most old Vaio's where it's all up to the proprietary firmware and you can do nothing about it10:03
KotCzarnyso no fan up to 63C, then waits till drops under 47C again10:03
KotCzarnyworks reliably and as i expected it to work10:03
totalizatorgreat10:04
KotCzarnyand since it's just a shell script, any configuration/changes are trivial10:05

totalizatorok, now, what should I do with my new n810? it has OS2008; should I flash it with something other? any alternative repos like community ssu for n900 or thumb versions or something?10:16
KotCzarnyit had a power kernel afair10:17
*** mavhc has quit IRC10:17
sicelocongrats totalizator!10:18
KotCzarnymakes a fine remote/controller/console10:18
totalizatoryup :) it has an ir blaster?10:19
KotCzarnynope10:20
KotCzarnybut wifi does the job10:20
totalizatorsilly me :E10:20
KotCzarnyyou can connect one via usb if you have a use for it10:20
*** mavhc has joined #maemo10:21
KotCzarnyhost mode is available without much fussing10:21
KotCzarnyi even used it with usb audio card10:21
KotCzarnywhich is recommended if you plan to use it as an oscp host10:21
totalizatorthen I have to start like on n800 and install the boot manager to run os from sd card10:22
KotCzarnyyeah, mine can run from internal flash/any sd10:22
KotCzarnywith those fast sd cards recently showing up it's definitely recommended10:22
totalizatorI'll leave the n800 for oscp10:22
*** eMHa has quit IRC10:23
KotCzarnywhy not both? ;)10:23
KotCzarnyyou can control n800's oscp with n810 oscp-remote10:23
KotCzarny;)10:23
totalizatoroh, I wanted to reuse some old sd, any advantage with the new ones?10:23
totalizatoromg, that's crazy :D but I like the idea10:23
KotCzarny4k random r/w10:23
KotCzarnyold sd cards suck big sucky balls in that regard10:24
KotCzarny1-10 iops range :P10:24
KotCzarnywith recent cards you can have almost normal responsivity10:24
KotCzarny100-1000iops range10:24
KotCzarnya1/a2 class10:24

totalizatoruh huh, looks like I have to catch up a bit10:30
totalizatorplus I have to check what card sits inside the n800, I have never complainded about the performance10:31
totalizatorand I hope the boot manager is still installable and possible to download somewhere10:31

totalizatorhas anyone tried postmarketos on n900 recently? how user firiendly it is?14:39
totalizatorhttps://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Nokia_N90014:39
totalizatorfriendly* :E14:39
siceloa/cu14:40
sicelouser friendly .. deends on how you define it.14:41
sicelopostmarketos is Alpine Linux, a desktop OS. what pmOS has done is to make it easy to run on phones. As far as N900 goes, it runs well. there's no 3d accel. so most windows managers are slow. i prefered i3, since we have hwkb, but xfce also fine. pmOS has KDE Plasma as the most mobile-optimised UI, but that won't work on N900 (wayland + 3d)14:44
sicelototalizator: if you want to evaluate alternative/modern OSes on N900, include Maemo Leste. you might be pleasantly surprised14:45
bencohsicelo: so they haven't merged the pvr work of the past year?14:46
sicelono.14:47
bencohI suppose they'd rather stick to mainline/vanilla kernel?14:47
sicelonot really. they even run vendor kernels in some cases. i think on N900 it is just a matter of not having enough people working on it14:48
bencohoh, okay14:48

* sparre broke his (current) N900 yesterday. It fell from about 1 m height, and something critical seems to have broken, as it won't power up.18:48
bencoh:/18:48
* sparre will have to check if any of his old N900's can be made to work.18:49
sicelosorry man18:54
siceloi'm looking at buying a second N900, but the price is (i think) a bit too steep for me. still debating18:55
sicelos/for me/for my liking/18:57
infobotsicelo meant: i'm looking at buying a second N900, but the price is (i think) a bit too steep for my liking. still debating18:57

sicelosince we don't have ShareIt, any suggestions for an easy way to share files from Android device to N900 via WiFi, without involving Internet? bluetooth is out because it's very slow for large files19:59

sparreKotCzarny: No.20:12
sparreKotCzarny: I can get a short orange blink when I plug in USB power, but that's all.20:13
KotCzarnyho hum20:24
KotCzarnyi wonder what broke20:30
KotCzarnymaybe some short in the panel20:30
sparreMy guess is a connection between the panel and the "body".20:48
KotCzarnydid you try disassembling then reassembling?20:49
sparreNot yet.20:50
KotCzarnymight be worth a shot, and you can even get a hint what broke20:51
sparreI've been a bit too busy to do anything but moving the SIM to a spare phone.20:51
sparreBut it is a good idea.20:51
KotCzarnymy n900 was meeting ground plethora of times20:52
