OksanaOkay, the question is long and convoluted... A Firefox-OS phone is Android-based, but does not have an apt-get to install dosfstools, so it cannot check its own filesystem, be it internal emmc or external SD card. Hence, I put SD card out of it and into N900, fsck'ed it, and since it seemed to be nice, tried to copy the files to N900's MyDocs.00:53
OksanaKeyword: tried. When you have 1.6GB and low battery, file-copy gets interrupted. Then, I try to do gdiff of copy-place and SD-card, and get that a file on N900's MyDocs has "Input/Output error". Ok, fsck-avl'ed MyDocs (or, at least, significant part of it). Do not know how to mount it back (umount'ed before fsck'ing), so reboot. gdiff still gives "Input/Output error", on same one single file.00:56
OksanaHow do I get fsck to check this one file? fsck'ing whole MyDocs takes too long.00:57
OksanaOh, and another irritation with fsck: it says that file size is large, cluster size is 0, hence, file is truncated to 0. Does it mean that it erases the files forever?01:04

Luke-JrOksana: you're aware Android doesn't normally have apt, right?01:41
OksanaOk, how do you get apt onto Android then, and is it possible to do it for Firefox OS?01:42
Luke-JrI'm not aware of any way to get apt onto Android..01:42

bencohthis might sound like a silly question, but .... why dont you just plug the sdcard in a card reader and on your computer ?01:48
OksanaGet a card reader, first. Second, would it be better to fsck the SD card in a Linux computer or a Windows computer - since I have choice? Currently, I am using N900 as Linux computer with built-in SD card reader.01:52
bencohI'd personally do it from a linux system01:53
OksanaSo, I should get an SD card reader, and wait a few days for it to arrive? ;-) Will try to. What's the best way to mount back MyDocs after an umount-fsck? The only way I know right now is reboot.01:54
bencohat least you wont have to worry about battery01:55
bencohand fight with n900 unresponsive IOs01:55
OksanaN900 is actually quite good. Though, as stress relief, I occasionally gestured in the air that I am chopping it into pieces.01:56
bencohhmm ?01:57
OksanaPoint-me: the hildon-desktop rotational bug which (if you hold the phone incorrectly during start-up) leads to hildon-desktop displayed as small, with black margins around it.01:58
bencohI think I've never seen that bug01:58

OksanaIt's irritating, and it should be the easier bug to fix. When compared to launcher open-closed bug (somehow related to catorise[plus]) which causes hildon to be slow.02:00
OksanaOk, so going into reboot to get MyDocs mounted back.02:02

OksanaNot sure about specific conditions. Maybe, you need to have in landscape in early-boot, in portrait in middle-boot, and in landscape in late-boot? ;-) Ok, I found a funny way to spend a bus travel - figuring out precisely when the bug happens :-)02:34

OksanaAbout competitors: Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G, has physical keyboard (five rows?), and such. Why is it being sold that cheap - under 200 USD on amazon?07:01
OksanaThat's after seeing old-ish Openmoko (no camera, CPU 0.4Hz) for 599 Euro at Pulster website.07:04
jogaandroid phones are cheap07:06
joga(relatively)07:06
jogadunno about that epic 4G but guessing it's old07:06
OksanaHmm... Why? It's not like it's impossible to get something else running on them?07:06
Oksana2010... Yes, I guess that's old.07:07
jogaobviously it's not very easy either or we would have a samsung phone running maemo ;)07:07
joga(or whatever)07:08
Luke-Jrjoga: well, maybe not. most Android phones have crappy capacitive ts07:08
jogamost of the world is happy with those07:08
jonwilI still believe the N900 is the best cellphone ever made.07:08
jonwilAnd that's only because the Neo900 isn't actually a thing yet :)07:09
Luke-JrN900 isn't really a cellphone..07:09
Luke-Jrjonwil: thoughts on the Pyra?07:09
jogait's the best portable terminal and IT multitool but a nokia 3210 beats it as phone07:09
jonwilHaven't seen enough on the Pyra to comment07:10
OksanaYes, resistive ts is more rare than qwerty hardware keyboard.07:12
jonwilAs a phone the N900 is far better than my old Motorola e378i, my old Motorola L6 and my old Motorola Z6 (the Z6 was one of the pre-Android Linux projects from Motorola that were always promised a "native code SDK"but never got one)07:12
jonwilAnd the N900 blows the pants off anything from crApple :P07:12
*** fmunozs has joined #maemo07:15
OksanaOkay, then where is the easy manual to: 1. solder a new microUSB port to the board, in the place where the old one was torn out; 2. not miss the phone calls - the device does not even ring; 3. fsck MyDocs partition - just "fsck -avl" does not repair it, at all, though I know where the problem files are located.07:19
OksanaI mean, I get notified that I missed a call, two minutes after missing it, and that does not give me enough time to call-back before caller chooses an alternative method of communication.07:20
OksanaAnd I cannot delete "Input/Output error" file, even if I wanted to - it's "read-only filesystem" for a reason.07:21
OksanaSorry for attacking you. Just people around are asking me to get a phone which actually works, and does not fall apart at seams.07:22
robbiethe1stFor a corrupted partition: Hook to a PC(or use a spare SD card), copy your files off. Reformat the partition. Copy back on07:31
robbiethe1stThere's a reason backupmenu exists, but it's usually the home/optfs that craps out07:31
OksanaGood night, and good luck. Reformat MyDocs? Oh [gods]... I will certainly take opportunity to send the files from read-only MyDocs through Bluetooth. Without MicroUSB, there can be no hooking to PC. There is no spare SD card, especially working one.07:32
robbiethe1stOuch.07:33
robbiethe1stMicroSD cards are cheap, though, aren't they?07:33
robbiethe1stLast time my usb port fell off, I backed up to a linux PC via wifi(ssh), using rsync; took about 3 full batteries to do it.07:33
robbiethe1stThe usb port is the one horribly stupid thing about this phone07:34
robbiethe1stThe sad thing is, I still can't find anything better: I love the resistive screen that is accurate and I can use my fingernail, the web browser with it's mouse mode for interacting with mouseovers and such, the nice, simple debian-based package management, and useful console, the hardware keyboard, and the camera slide-cover07:37
robbiethe1stEveryone wants iphone-clones these days, I guess07:37
robbiethe1stOh, and the landscape-native system was a good idea too -- except for phone calls, why would you use portrate for anything?07:37
joga~usbfix07:38
infobotwell, usbfix is http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=75920 - and **NEVER** use epoxy (unless you want to seal your device for underwater), or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYz5nIHH0iY#t=1866, you will basically need two irons: a small good one (or better hot-air reflow) and a 60+ Watt07:38

OksanaThank you, robbiethe1st. Portrait is very useful for scrolling long lists, currently, be it in file manager or somewhere else. Since nobody invented landscape-usable scrollable lists, yet. I have an idea about that... Define widget "scrollable list" in portrait like two lists, side by side: one of them contains one half of the list, the other contains the other half. So, you see the first...23:34
Oksana...and the last items in the list at the same time. When you scroll either of these two lists, the other auto-scrolls, too. So, to search whole list, you only need to scroll to half of the list, because you will simultaneously search the beginning and the end of the list. Confusing? It gets rid of ascending-descending switches nicely, though.23:34
