DocScrutinizer05well, prolly SSU00:44
DocScrutinizer05Nokia SSU00:44
DocScrutinizer05but honestly who would update nowadays?00:45
DocScrutinizer05who would be silly enough to flash a PR1.2 or whatever and then update?00:45
infobotsomebody said combined was the rootfs fiasco image of maemo. For N900 latest (PR1.3.1) see, or
DocScrutinizer05^^^ *this* is the most recent official Nokia fremantle release00:46
DocScrutinizer05maybe when you didn't look at your N900 sitting in the shelf for 2 years, then you actually could upgrade from PR1.2 which you maybe still are running on that dusty N900, by using Nokia's SSU repo00:48
honestlyDoes Nokia's SSU repo still exist?00:49
DocScrutinizer05name: "Nokia Systemsoftwareaktualisierungen", internet addr: "", distribution: "./"00:51
DocScrutinizer05and yes, I think if it wouldn't exist then HAM would throw an error from it00:51

MaxdamantusHmm .. when I booted into my debian installation the charge function seems to just work.01:45
* Maxdamantus wonders what's making it work.01:45
* Maxdamantus thought userspace had to do something to enable it (other than just load the module)01:45
Maxdamantusmaybe that was because there wasn't a kernel module for it, dunno.01:45

ShadowJKsolid shining led indicates the charger is without software control02:37
ShadowJKTypically when the charger is under software control, the software disables the led, and makes it pulsate instead02:37
ShadowJK(though amusingly, as the LED controller is so programmable, it will keep blinking the led long after the software crashes)02:38

DocScrutinizer05that's alsa03:29
keriohw mixer?03:29
Maxdamantusalsa also does sw mixing.03:32
DocScrutinizer05mixer is a generic term in this context03:33
DocScrutinizer05I anyway wonder where's your -c 0 parameter for amixer03:33
MaxdamantusOh, thought it was referring to the act of combining multiple audio streams into one.03:33
MaxdamantusI don't think you need it for listing mixers.03:34
DocScrutinizer05it does this as well, for some pathes03:34
Maxdamantusit's meant to do it automatically now.03:34
DocScrutinizer05~ # amixer scontents | grep '^Simple mixer control' | wc -l03:34

MaxdamantusI only see one card with the 3.14 kernel.03:36
Maxdamantusis the default one in maemo routed to pulseaudio or something?03:36

* Maxdamantus is trying to figure out what control to use to make the headphone jack work.03:38
DocScrutinizer05"make work2 is a funny goal03:39
DocScrutinizer05I'd say it needs at least 5..10 comtrols in right position, to "make hs jack work"03:40
DocScrutinizer05the joy of mixers03:40
Maxdamantusalso wonder why mplayer plays back music slowly.03:41
MaxdamantusPresumably not a CPU usage issue, as I imagine that'd make it jitter rather than play slowly.03:41
DocScrutinizer05here: OMAP SSI out (if that's what you want), then 320aic34 or what's it called, and finally the hs-amp which has its own I2C control03:42
DocScrutinizer05tuning also too low?03:42
Maxdamantusso it's like the actual wave is longer.03:43
DocScrutinizer05then prolly the "audiocard" clock is lower than mplayer assumes03:43
DocScrutinizer05try aplay03:44
*** dimw1t has joined #maemo03:44

Maxdamantussame thing happens with aplay03:45
DocScrutinizer05aplay -D <alsadevice> -vv sound.wav03:45
Maxdamantusbut adding `-af resample=48000` to mplayer makes it sound better.03:45
DocScrutinizer05yep, N900 has fixed audio clock of 48k iirc03:46
Maxdamantusmaybe alsa isn't resampling (the source is 44.1 kHz)03:46
DocScrutinizer05depends on your audiodev03:47
MaxdamantusMk, guess that makes sense.03:47
DocScrutinizer05try plughw:0.003:47
DocScrutinizer05maybe your !default def is odd03:47
Maxdamantusbut would've expected it to fail saying 44.1 kHz isn't supported by the output or something, maybe the driver's just not mature enough to do that yet.03:47
DocScrutinizer05aplay -vv03:48

Maxdamantusinvalid value for card.03:50
MaxdamantusWhat's plughw meant to be?03:51
DocScrutinizer05plughw should be a combo of plug and hw03:51
DocScrutinizer05plug is a universal resampling and mapping/convertig plugin03:51
DocScrutinizer05prolly fremantle never heard of it and does everything in PolypAudio03:52
MaxdamantusI'm not in freemantle.03:53
Maxdamantusin a fairly plain Debian.03:53

Maxdamantusjust adding a plug didn't seem to do anything, but I don't really understand it, so might've used it wrong.03:57 {03:57
DocScrutinizer05        type plug               # Automatic conversion PCM03:57
MaxdamantusYeah, that's what I had, then slave.pcm "hw:0,0"03:58
Maxdamantusnow I have slave.pcm "main"03:58
Maxdamantusand pcm.main a dmix thing03:58
Maxdamantus(didn't need to specify the rateā€”it must've at least figured that out automatically when creating the dmix device)03:59
Maxdamantusah, so you specify the rate in the slave configuration.04:00
*** dos1 has quit IRC04:01
Maxdamantusand that works for multiple programs already, so don't need dmix, which would presumably have been a small amount of overhead.04:01

MaxdamantusYeah, mine's the same for pcm.plughw at least.04:06
Maxdamantusanyway, it all works by just adding the plug to /etc/asound.conf04:06
Maxdamantuscan make that pcm.!default there too.04:06
DocScrutinizer05IroN900:~# diff /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf.origJR /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf04:08
DocScrutinizer05< defaults.namehint.extended off04:08
DocScrutinizer05> defaults.namehint.extended on04:08
DocScrutinizer05plughw:0.0 is same as plug:'hw:0.0'04:10
DocScrutinizer05the alsa plugin stack is basically just a set of nested "function calls", with parameters04:11
Maxdamantuswell, both of them seem to exist, but using them just says "Invalid value for card"04:11
DocScrutinizer05yeah, is PA started?04:12
DocScrutinizer05hmm, hw:0,0 ?04:12
Maxdamantusah, that doesn't work either.04:13
DocScrutinizer05dunno, there been a catch but I forgot it, it's a known gotcha04:13
Maxdamantusah, should be card 104:13
DocScrutinizer05-vv for aplay help a lot to understand plugin stack and what it does04:14
DocScrutinizer05aplay -l and aplay -L also helps04:15
Maxdamantuseh, no, should be card 0.04:15
MaxdamantusI used `pcm.main.slave.pcm "hw:0,0"` as part of the dmix thing and it worked.04:15
Maxdamantusagh, accidentally typed a . instead of ,04:16
Maxdamantusso plughw:0,0 does work, but it's still the wrong rate.04:16
Maxdamantuswhen I made the plug device in /etc/asound.conf I had to specify the rate.04:16
DocScrutinizer05slave no proper rate definition?04:16
DocScrutinizer05hw:0,0 should have rate 4800004:17
MaxdamantusHow do you find out?04:17
MaxdamantusI suspect the driver isn't reporting it as having that rate, or is reporting it as having that rate and others, while it only actually supports that rate.04:18
Maxdamantusbut not that familiar with alsa, so my suspiciouns aren't strong.04:19
DocScrutinizer05there's only defaults.pcm.dmix.rate 4800004:19
MaxdamantusNot using dmix atm04:19
DocScrutinizer05try slave dmix04:19
Maxdamantusdmix works, but so does plug, as long as I specify the rate.04:19
Maxdamantuspcm.!default.slave.rate 4800004:20
DocScrutinizer05use slave dmix for plug04:20
Maxdamantususing slave.pcm "hw:0,0"04:21
DocScrutinizer05yep, and it seems that has no proper rate spec04:21
DocScrutinizer05while dmix has04:21
MaxdamantusOh, I do need dmix to use multiple programs at once.04:21
DocScrutinizer05so try:  plug:dmix as device04:22
DocScrutinizer05or plug:'dmix:0,0'04:22
MaxdamantusHm. That works.04:23
DocScrutinizer05I'm not fluent in this stuff anymore04:23
Maxdamantuswithout anything in /etc/asound.conf04:23
Maxdamantusthe first one does04:23
DocScrutinizer05etc/asound.conf is just a extension to /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf04:24
MaxdamantusYeah, suspected that.04:24
DocScrutinizer05basically you shouldn't need etc/asound.conf04:24
Maxdamantusjust meant "without any extra configuration"04:24
*** TheMartian is now known as cybr1d04:24

DocScrutinizer05but it also shows some details about how to create a alsa plugin, and how to define slave04:32
DocScrutinizer05nothing particularly exciting, once you read the ALSA plugin wikipage04:33

DocScrutinizer05well, then you're set with the info that N900 hw can only do rate=4800004:36
MaxdamantusMaybe it was charging.04:36
Maxdamantusor maybe it means it's about to run out of battery.04:36
DocScrutinizer05it tries to "charge" to 3.6V, and it stops after 30min04:37
infobotRemove battery for 1 minute. Insert battery. Plug powered ***NOKIA WALLCHARGER*** to device. Watch steady amber. Let sit and charge. Do NOT try to boot. After 30 min, you got either a) a booted up N900, b) flashing amber which means you can boot, c) steady amber going off - in this case start over again with ~flatbatrecover. CAVEAT! Only works when ~rootfs is OK (no ~bootloop)!.04:37

DocScrutinizer05well, dunno which kernel modules you got04:39
Maxdamantusthere were two battery-related modules in /lib/modules/`uname -r`, didn't check which were loaded.04:40
DocScrutinizer05as soon as something talks to chip via I2C, it goes into guided mode / slave mode, which means it needs a watchdog tickle every 15s, otherwise it resets. In that mode the chip can get configured to charge to higher volatge, arbitrary current, and you can control the LED04:41
DocScrutinizer05he chip is bq2415004:42
MaxdamantusMm .. it must've been charging .. rebooting back into Maemo shows 91% (the usual maximum charge)04:42

DocScrutinizer05((works without that bupbat thing fine)) mine usually does too, except for the little annoyance that the date&time picker dialog is faster than the time telegram from my carrier, and the dialog doesn't notice when in background the system time gets set15:44
DocScrutinizer05often it annoys me so much that I rather simply reboot when date&time dialog pops up, on second boot the time is set correctly15:45
