brolin_empey | It no longer matters in practice but I wonder if my Maemo 5 installation is very unresponsive because that el-v1.db (correct name?) file grew too large. I should check the size of this file out of curiosity. | 09:01 |
brolin_empey | Wow, brolin-N900 still boots from battery after sitting powered off on the shelf for months. The battery is almost empty, though. | 09:08 |
brolin_empey | Yes, apparently I correctly remembered the file name of this database. | 09:18 |
brolin_empey | Eh, Maemo 5 does not have a “locate” command, at least not in the path? | 09:21 |
brolin_empey | I will use find instead of locate. | 09:23 |
*** kraft has joined #maemo | 09:23 | |
brolin_empey | Apparently my el-v1.db file is 4 425 728 bytes long. Is that why Maemo 5 is so unresponsive for me, even right after booting, before running anything demanding? | 09:33 |

brolin_empey | Wow, running free shows how badly the N900 needs more than 256 MiB of physical memory. | 09:38 |

brolin_empey | I renamed my el-v1.db file and rebooted. I saved a screenshot showing the output of free before renaming the file and after rebooting. The physical memory usage seems mostly unchanged but the swap usage decreased dramatically from around 113 MB to around 5 MB. The GUI seems much more responsive during my limited testing but I still prefer my Galaxy Note 3 despite its lack of an integrated hardware keyboard. | 10:45 |
brolin_empey | Apparently one thing my N900 can do that my Galaxy Note 3 in its current configuration cannot do is use a USB↔Ethernet adapter but my N900 can do that only because I am using the power kernel with my own patch from 2013 to add the USB identifiers missing from the driver in the 2.6.28 kernel. | 10:51 |
KotCzarny | which is basically what maemo is about | 10:52 |
KotCzarny | user freedom | 10:52 |
brolin_empey | Granted, I rarely need Ethernet connectivity on a handheld computer but having it beats using a notebook computer for something a handheld computer can do. I also succeeded to use my N900 as a handheld serial terminal emulator using minicom and a USB↔RS232 serial adapter. I do not know if my Galaxy Note 3 in its current configuration can do this either but, again, the times I use this capability in practice are very few. | 10:58 |
brolin_empey | The Android OS 4.4 from Samsung I use has the asix driver but I could not get my USB↔Ethernet adapter working. If I spent more time on this problem, possibly including switching to an unofficial distribution of the Android OS, I may succeed but I am hesitant to use an unofficial distribution of the Android OS again after my CyanogenMod installation broke itself, which is why I use the official distribution again. | 11:02 |
brolin_empey | Theoretically I can push-start my current car because it has a manual transmission but I still relied upon a surrogate vehicle to jump-start my car the only time I had a flat battery in the four years since I got the car. | 11:07 |
brolin_empey | KotCzarny: Do your preferred Orange something (Orange Pi?) ARM Linux SBCs have ATA connectivity, in this case probably SATA? The lack of SATA connectivity on the Raspberry Pi is limiting if you want to use an HDD or even some SSDs. | 11:12 |
KotCzarny | you can use usb-sata (but use real one, ie jms378 and not some crap) | 11:12 |
KotCzarny | and arm on those cheapo boards are limited by data bandwidth. but at least they dont share ONE usb2.0 for everything as in rpi | 11:13 |
KotCzarny | so you can get 3x40MB/s without a problem | 11:13 |
KotCzarny | but if you want real speed use rk3399/pro or if you are real about data throughput, choose marvell | 11:14 |
brolin_empey | KotCzarny: Then the answer seems to be no. Some ARM Linux SBCs, such as the Nitrogen models from Boundary Devices, have an integrated SATA host controller, presumably natively connected instead of using a USB↔SATA converter/bridge. | 11:16 |
KotCzarny | if you dont mind 2 cores instead of 4 you can use A20 based one | 11:17 |
KotCzarny | they have native sata port | 11:17 |
KotCzarny | find yourself sbc with minipcie slot, then add minipci-2/4sata | 11:18 |
KotCzarny | it's the best solution than trying to find one having it native | 11:19 |
