brolin_empeyIt no longer matters in practice but I wonder if my Maemo 5 installation is very unresponsive because that el-v1.db (correct name?) file grew too large.  I should check the size of this file out of curiosity.09:01
brolin_empeyWow, brolin-N900 still boots from battery after sitting powered off on the shelf for months. The battery is almost empty, though.09:08
brolin_empeyYes, apparently I correctly remembered the file name of this database.09:18
brolin_empeyEh, Maemo 5 does not have a “locate” command, at least not in the path?09:21
brolin_empeyI will use find instead of locate.09:23
*** kraft has joined #maemo09:23
brolin_empeyApparently my el-v1.db file is 4 425 728 bytes long.  Is that why Maemo 5 is so unresponsive for me, even right after booting, before running anything demanding?09:33
*** FalconSpy has joined #maemo09:37
brolin_empeyWow, running free shows how badly the N900 needs more than 256 MiB of physical memory.09:38
brolin_empeyIs it technically possible to have more than 256 MiB on the N900 motherboard, even if it requires replacing a fine-pitch BGA IC?09:40

sixwheeledbeastisn't some of that controlled with tracker?10:06
KotCzarnycontacts/sms db is different from tracker db i think10:07
sixwheeledbeastas is tracker indexing some things from el file into it's own tracker db10:08
sixwheeledbeastin10:08
sparrebrolin_empey: Right after booting, it is likely that "rtcom-messaging-ui" is eating 90-100% CPU, while scanning your message history.10:26
sparrebrolin_empey: With my 20 Mb el-v1, it takes around a minute.10:27
sparre(from memory, I didn't try to time it exactly)10:27

brolin_empeyI renamed my el-v1.db file and rebooted.  I saved a screenshot showing the output of free before renaming the file and after rebooting.  The physical memory usage seems mostly unchanged but the swap usage decreased dramatically from around 113 MB to around 5 MB.  The GUI seems much more responsive during my limited testing but I still prefer my Galaxy Note 3 despite its lack of an integrated hardware keyboard.10:45
brolin_empeyApparently one thing my N900 can do that my Galaxy Note 3 in its current configuration cannot do is use a USB↔Ethernet adapter but my N900 can do that only because I am using the power kernel with my own patch from 2013 to add the USB identifiers missing from the driver in the 2.6.28 kernel.10:51
KotCzarnywhich is basically what maemo is about10:52
KotCzarnyuser freedom10:52
brolin_empeyGranted, I rarely need Ethernet connectivity on a handheld computer but having it beats using a notebook computer for something a handheld computer can do.  I also succeeded to use my N900 as a handheld serial terminal emulator using minicom and a USB↔RS232 serial adapter.  I do not know if my Galaxy Note 3 in its current configuration can do this either but, again, the times I use this capability in practice are very few.10:58
brolin_empeyThe Android OS 4.4 from Samsung I use has the asix driver but I could not get my USB↔Ethernet adapter working.  If I spent more time on this problem, possibly including switching to an unofficial distribution of the Android OS, I may succeed but I am hesitant to use an unofficial distribution of the Android OS again after my CyanogenMod installation broke itself, which is why I use the official distribution again.11:02
brolin_empeyTheoretically I can push-start my current car because it has a manual transmission but I still relied upon a surrogate vehicle to jump-start my car the only time I had a flat battery in the four years since I got the car.11:07
brolin_empeyKotCzarny: Do your preferred Orange something (Orange Pi?) ARM Linux SBCs have ATA connectivity, in this case probably SATA?  The lack of SATA connectivity on the Raspberry Pi is limiting if you want to use an HDD or even some SSDs.11:12
KotCzarnyyou can use usb-sata (but use real one, ie jms378 and not some crap)11:12
KotCzarnyand arm on those cheapo boards are limited by data bandwidth. but at least they dont share ONE usb2.0 for everything as in rpi11:13
KotCzarnyso you can get 3x40MB/s without a problem11:13
KotCzarnybut if you want real speed use rk3399/pro or if you are real about data throughput, choose marvell11:14
brolin_empeyKotCzarny: Then the answer seems to be no.  Some ARM Linux SBCs, such as the Nitrogen models from Boundary Devices, have an integrated SATA host controller, presumably natively connected instead of using a USB↔SATA converter/bridge.11:16
KotCzarnyif you dont mind 2 cores instead of 4 you can use A20 based one11:17
KotCzarnythey have native sata port11:17
KotCzarnyfind yourself sbc with minipcie slot, then add minipci-2/4sata11:18
KotCzarnyit's the best solution than trying to find one having it native11:19

{-0-}Hi all! USB socket repair... trawling through the big thread on the forum but it seems a lot of the pictures are missing. Am I correct in thinking that the 5 tiny pads at the back and the 4 medium pads round the outside are all soldered but the 2 big squares underneath are glued?16:23

infobotit has been said that usbfix is http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=75920 - and **NEVER** use epoxy (unless you want to seal your device for underwater), or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYz5nIHH0iY#t=1866, you will basically need two irons: a small good one (or better hot-air reflow) and a 60+ Watt, or to avoid breakage, see ~usb-unplug17:55

infoboti guess usb-unplug is http://maemo.cloud-7.de/share-service/20140721_002.mp419:49
sixwheeledbeastI believe that is the "correct" way to unplug your usb to avoid damage19:53
{-0-}I got it at a carboot with broken USB, no obvious damage to the casing so I don't know if it's a wear and tear breakage or an oops breakage19:58
{-0-}And the screen was in better condition than my existing N900, so that's been swapped19:59

KotCzarnyone tricky thing is using other peoples chargers/cables20:23
