DocScrutinizer05the reason why you must (or at least once had to, in better times) apply with your full name and address, and get authenticated to a degree where you can get held liable, when you want to upload anything to maemo-extras closed01:23
DocScrutinizer05https://cypherpunktalks.slack.com/messages/C994AE797/details/01:23
KotCzarnythat page requires login01:24
DocScrutinizer05oops sorry01:25
DocScrutinizer05fscking slack URL redirect01:25
DocScrutinizer05https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/05/malware-found-in-ubuntu-snap-store.html01:25
KotCzarnywtf. hextris was good and fun open source game01:26
KotCzarnyit's a pity someone takes free stuff and adds toxic01:27
MaxdamantusThis is why "apps" should generally be sandboxed.01:31
DocScrutinizer05pretty common though. I'd say whatsapp got invented that way ;-P01:31
Maxdamantusimo iOS has been doing the right thing there, and I think Apple are doing something similar with the macOS store.01:32
MaxdamantusIt's perfectly feasible to do in Linux, but the major distributors at least don't seem to do it.01:32
DocScrutinizer05or what else except adding bling and toxid did they do to IRC to invent wutzap01:33
Maxdamantus"malware" in apps should be comparable to "malware" on websites01:33
Maxdamantusapps/websites shouldn't be able to do arbitrary things as the user, so it shouldn't be a major issue.01:34
Maxdamantusand of course most games should be considered "apps", since they don't need arbitrary access to the filesystem; they just need access to an isolated place to store their state.01:35
KotCzarnymaybe we should fix people, not do workarounds01:35
Maxdamantus"fix people" doesn't work when it comes to computer security.01:35
MaxdamantusYou're meant to assume that people are malicious.01:35
MaxdamantusThat's why even supposedly legitimate organisations aren't able to access my filesystem if I just visit their website.01:36
KotCzarnyunless they use exploits01:37
KotCzarny:)01:37
MaxdamantusAll of my computers rely on Linux. That doesn't mean it would be suitable for kernel.org to be able to access my filesystem when I visit it in my browser.01:37
MaxdamantusIt's just a matter of limiting trust.01:40
MaxdamantusThere's no reason to have to come up with a system where we have to trust or audit every random game developer.01:41
DocScrutinizer05okm whatapp prolly has some magic to work around NAT (like STUN or ICE, whatever), so it performs a lil bit less troublesome on DCC-filesharing01:41
MaxdamantusYou can instead just have a system where you set up a sandbox capable of running untrusted code. That's the basis of web browsers, and imo OSes should be doing the same thing in a lot of cases.01:42
DocScrutinizer05the problem indeed are people who got so ignorant they can't even imagine there might be such thing like malware and where it's likely to be found01:43
DocScrutinizer05>How was this possible? Well, the Ubuntu Snap Store allows anyone to upload snap packages01:43
DocScrutinizer05>An interesting aspect is that Nicolas Tomb used a proprietary license for at least some of his snaps01:43
DocScrutinizer05and that's where I mused how maemo is or is not threatened by this01:44
ShadowJKI would've just assumed it went through server01:44
DocScrutinizer05ShadowJK: possibly01:44
DocScrutinizer05ICE also does, iirc, under certain conditions01:44
ShadowJKEspecially since whatsapp likes to burn tons of cpu cycles to compress things before it sends01:45
DocScrutinizer05lol, yeah, samrt on a smartphone01:45
Maxdamantusalso, something else to be wary of is the fact that code usually has bugs.01:52
MaxdamantusSo even if you trust that someone will not intentionally put malware in their programs, their programs could have bugs that allow other malicious people to obtain the same level of access as the program.01:53
MaxdamantusThose are usually the more important issues.01:54

brolin_empeyenyc: sixwheeledbeast: KotCzarny: Long story short, I was using IE only because I was troubleshooting the problem that the audio output from my computer stopped while listening to music on YouTube in Vivaldi, which is currently my primary desktop Web browser because I have a bad user experience with Firefox because I have too many problems with Firefox.  The solution/workaround in the end was to disconnect and reconnect the 3.5-mm plug for the analog audio04:37
brolin_empeyextension cable I use for my headphones from the rear panel of my motherboard.  Apparently https://www.youtube.com/ still loads in IE11 on Windows 7 and in IE10 on Windows 8 (not Windows 8.1) at work so I do not know what is wrong with my IE11 on Windows 10 at home.04:37

brolin_empeyenyc: https://www.youtube.com/ now loads in IE11 on the same Windows 10 installation.12:45
enychrrm, any idea why  nano-opt   pkg in maemo doesn't want to color synhighligh, yet vim does?12:48
brolin_empeyenyc: This Windows 10 installation is not changing because it is partially broken and can no longer upgrade itself.  I never let my Windows installations automatically update themselves because Windows automatically reboots if it is allowed to automatically update itself.  I need my computer to continue running unless I tell it to do otherwise.12:48
Maxdamantusenyc: I would've thought nano wouldn't be the sort of editor to support syntax highlighting.12:49
Maxdamantusaiui, nano is pretty basic; I don't think it has a scripting language behind it, so there's probably nothing to specialise on particular languages.12:49
MaxdamantusHm. I guess some screenshots I see have highlighting of C at least.12:50
brolin_empeyenyc: I use different operating systems for different purposes.  I prefer GNU+Windows NT as a desktop client platform because I need or want to do things that are feasible only by using Windows NT as the host OS.12:53
