merlin1991hm seems like I can only start this -testing update when I'm back, need to talk to freemangordon and luf before I go further00:30
DocScrutinizer05merlin1991: when will that be?00:32
merlin19911st of september00:33
DocScrutinizer05well, bearable00:33
DocScrutinizer05I'd be more interested in pushing new S from current T, _before_ we prepare new T00:34
merlin1991also luf is on vacation atm aswell afaik00:34
merlin1991that's on the timetable for 2nd to 7th00:34
*** MrPingu has quit IRC00:34
DocScrutinizer05mhm00:34
DocScrutinizer05well, if that doesn't complicate your duty to base on last recent T for preparing S from it (probably a no-issue)00:35
merlin1991we'll prepare new S from last T not the one I'm currently working on00:36
DocScrutinizer05we still have no bleeding edge stuff in T, morphin it into -devel's S00:36
merlin1991there's enough there already :D00:36
merlin1991basically everything ke-recv related + a few cev things, and some fixes on modest iirc00:36
DocScrutinizer05so shouldn't be too hard to pick the right commit00:36
DocScrutinizer05cev?00:37
merlin1991err cve00:37
DocScrutinizer05oooh cve. which ones?00:38
merlin1991I think libxml and pango and curl00:38
DocScrutinizer05:nod:00:38
DocScrutinizer05already forgot once more what's friggin pango00:38
DocScrutinizer05curl seems to have stabilized00:39
merlin1991and also openssl00:39
DocScrutinizer05libxml? nfc00:39
DocScrutinizer05oh yeah openssl, nice one00:39
merlin1991pango is font rendering just like freetype00:39
DocScrutinizer05aah thanks00:40
merlin1991~seen luf00:41
merlin1991dang no infobot00:41
DocScrutinizer05I'm waiting for my ssh account to bot server to get activated00:41
DocScrutinizer05wait another 30 min and I hope bot ressurects00:42
DocScrutinizer05!seen luf00:42
DocScrutinizer05bah!00:42
DocScrutinizer05povbot_: seen luf00:42
povbot_DocScrutinizer05: luf was last seen in #maemo-ssu 2 days, 21 hours, 51 minutes, and 57 seconds ago: <luf> Just FYI I'm on vacation for next 10 days without access to internet. So I'm not totaly dead (just digitaly dead) :D00:42
* merlin1991 just found it in his logs aswell00:43
DocScrutinizer05povbot_: useless00:43
povbot_DocScrutinizer05: Error: "useless" is not a valid command.00:43
merlin1991so he'll be back when I'm back, so I'll get the -testing release out then asap00:43
DocScrutinizer05isn't chem|st on holiday as well?00:43
merlin1991yep00:43
DocScrutinizer05hehe, so I have to keep the graveyard watch here00:44
merlin1991or is he only going on vacation on the 7th, I don't remember the details00:44
merlin1991btw coming week I'll be more dead than my holidays on greece00:44
merlin1991I expect about 0 free time with internet access00:45
DocScrutinizer05dead as in "no connectivity"?00:45
merlin1991yep00:45
DocScrutinizer05we'll try hard to survive that hard time ;-)00:45
merlin1991:D00:45
DocScrutinizer05nevertheless you could create a git account for me, recently somebody asked for a git repo and you weren't around00:46
merlin1991well you have to create a gitorious account yourself, I can only add you to the cssu group00:46
DocScrutinizer05ok, will ponder that00:47
merlin1991but ie jaffa should have accesss00:47
merlin1991-s00:47
DocScrutinizer05yep, but jaffa wasn't available either00:47
merlin1991hm I think I'll do a -testing release tomorrow (if I find time in vienna), it's only microb-engine obexd and evolution-data-server missing from the stuff that could go into the release00:47
* DocScrutinizer05 yawns00:47
DocScrutinizer05otoh a git repo 5 days later won't be end of the world00:48
DocScrutinizer05we can care about git admin redundancy another time00:48
merlin1991atm I have cssu-enabler, qt4, modest, tinymail, xterm, osso-wlan, kernel-policy, and upstart ready00:49
*** MrPingu has joined #maemo-ssu00:49
DocScrutinizer05wtf is kernel-policy?00:49
DocScrutinizer05and UPSTART?! :-o00:49
merlin1991it's a package that controls various things, in our case pali changed the jackbias settings so that one can use the button on the headset :)00:49
DocScrutinizer05aah that one00:50
merlin1991upstart has a fix to enable +x on fat and a short notice to /etc/fstab that it is indeed auto generated00:50
DocScrutinizer05don't you think it would need a bit more of field testing? it is rather green yet00:50
DocScrutinizer05mhm, sounds low profile for upstart00:50
merlin1991well it has absolutely no effect unless someone listens for the information, so it can't be *that* bad00:51
merlin1991(policy-settings that is)00:51
DocScrutinizer05ooh?00:51
DocScrutinizer05thought it comes with RE'd prolog tables or whatever00:51
merlin1991according to Pali those prolog tables are 100% decompileable (which is what he did)00:52
DocScrutinizer05hmm, if the resulting "binary" is diff $?=000:52
DocScrutinizer05otherwise I think it hasn't seen much of any testing yet00:53
merlin1991well ofc it is not diff $?=0 because the jackbias setting is different :)00:53
DocScrutinizer05yep00:53
DocScrutinizer05since it affects audio of a phone, I consider it risky00:54
merlin1991well remember the ke-recv disaster we had00:54
merlin1991nothing can get worse than that :D00:54
DocScrutinizer05:nod:00:54
DocScrutinizer05arr, no audio on phonecalls even worse tha ke-recv desaster00:55
DocScrutinizer05just saying, I'd be wary to throw it into T in current state of verification00:56
merlin1991I dunno Pali threw the decompile script into the repo aswell and it looked like it's really simple00:57
DocScrutinizer05I haven't noticed it getting deployed even as test tarball or anything, anywhere. Maybe I missed that00:57
merlin1991it's somewhere in the omp tmo thread afaik00:57
DocScrutinizer05any feedback?00:57
merlin1991I'd have to check :)00:58
merlin1991but at some point we have to start trusting our devels :)00:58
merlin1991and also it's -testing after all00:58
DocScrutinizer05at least *minimal* tests and feedback (some half dozen users or so) might be worth it00:58
merlin1991no promis of rock stability there00:58
merlin1991DocScrutinizer05: I'll always install it on my device before releasing it to the whild00:59
*** MrPingu has quit IRC00:59
DocScrutinizer05sure no promise, but otoh everybody using T as his personal S meanwhile00:59
DocScrutinizer05and it's each time the same, balance between risk and impact00:59
merlin1991PEBKAC01:00
DocScrutinizer05I'd give a shit about verification state of a pink pony wallpaper, or a special ringtone01:01
DocScrutinizer05but I'd like to see some minimal tests on something possibly fecking up audio01:01
DocScrutinizer05you recall that weird though scary event when some FMRX stuff smoked up the microphone hard?01:02
DocScrutinizer05still an ubsolved mystery01:03
DocScrutinizer05unsolved*01:03
merlin1991I have no idea what you're talking about01:03
DocScrutinizer05in very early maemo5 days we had some destructed hw due to sokme FMRX package messing with those policies01:04
merlin1991phew, sounds scary01:04
DocScrutinizer05users had to send in their devices for warranty repair, iirc01:04
DocScrutinizer05that's what I mean, audio is scary - just a tiny bit01:05
merlin1991nevertheless, I'll test it on my device and will only publish after that, but afaik Pali has been running it for quite some time, same as a few people on the omp thread (just read the posts there)01:05
DocScrutinizer05I'd sleep better if some half dozen users tested it befor we deploy it to masses01:05
DocScrutinizer05well, if there on that thread are half a dozen reports like  "WFM", I'm almost happy01:06
DocScrutinizer05I'd still like to test it myself before we deploy01:07
*** mase_76 has joined #maemo-ssu01:07
merlin1991it's already in -devel01:07
DocScrutinizer05and I'm glad to hear you'll test as well01:07
DocScrutinizer05duh01:07
merlin1991http://maemo.merlin1991.at/cssu/community-devel/pool/free/p/policy-settings-rx51/01:07
DocScrutinizer05so probably a few more than half a dozen users already01:07
DocScrutinizer05aaaah THAT -devel01:08
merlin1991ofc not extras-devel :D01:08
merlin1991but you can wget the .deb from there and try for yourself01:08
DocScrutinizer05I'll give it a try01:08
merlin1991it should be (almost) 1:1 to what ends up in -testing01:09
*** mase76 has quit IRC01:10
DocScrutinizer05well, maybe we do it the right way this time: test the complete cssu-t release before deployment01:10
DocScrutinizer05hm?01:10
merlin1991well I'll scp and dpkg all pkgs on my device, but how do you want todo it yourself?01:11
DocScrutinizer05I'm volunteering for guinea pig01:11
DocScrutinizer05dunno, we'd need an unofficial repo URL for that, I guess01:11
DocScrutinizer05everything else is faking the real thing01:12
merlin1991could hack that up tomorrow if I find that time (should be a straigt copy&paste from the other repos on my server)01:12
DocScrutinizer05yep, that's what I thought01:12
*** MrPingu has joined #maemo-ssu01:12
DocScrutinizer05much appreciated01:13
merlin1991yea, I'll see how much time I have tomorrow, I've planned 2 hours of random time before I have to get to the airport, but crazy stuff can always happen01:13
merlin1991anyway, bed time gn01:13
DocScrutinizer05and one grannite rule: never deploy anything on Friday (or even before you go to holiday)01:14
DocScrutinizer05n8 merlin199101:14
DocScrutinizer05(friday) murphy's law says this will always fail01:14
DocScrutinizer05and odds are nobody notices it until the only one who can fix it isn't available anymore for next 2 weeks ;-)01:15

gregoamerlin1991, DocScrutinizer05: I've policy-settings-rx51 0.4.10.8+0m5 installed from maemo.merlin1991.at (since it's there) and my device hasn't gone up in smoke yet. anything specific I should look out for?02:48
DocScrutinizer05gregoa: sure :-) many thanks! please check all audio functions02:49
ShadowJKwith default maemo install I was particulary impressed how listening to headphone music, receiving incoming call, it didn't blast caller with music or mute caller to me, it paused music. Same for bluetooth02:51
DocScrutinizer05whatever you can think of: BT headset, BT stereo music, wired same, speakerphone, normal phone, ringtones, recorder via internal mic & wired mic in headset & BT. FMRX to any possible sink, FMTX from any possible source02:51
gregoaDocScrutinizer05: phone calls work, sms notifications are noisy, I can play audio files. - and I don't have any fancy headset with buttons or BT to test ...02:51
ShadowJKre bluetooth, amusingly, listening to device-local bt a2dp audio is more reliable than listening to device-local through headphone :-)02:52
DocScrutinizer05oooh, and of course AV-out02:53
DocScrutinizer05gregoa: almost every headset has one button02:54
DocScrutinizer05fancy multibutton wired headsets don't work with N900 anyway02:55
DocScrutinizer05the headset that usually ships with every N900 has a button as well02:55
DocScrutinizer05inside the mic blob02:55
DocScrutinizer05just squeeze it02:56
gregoaDocScrutinizer05: ah right, just found the original headset and it has a button :) what is it supposed to do? i.e. how can I test it?02:58
DocScrutinizer05that's the whole point of pali's mods. It basicaly triggers a kernel IRQ that emits a kernel event which probably gets received by ke-recv od hald-addon-whatever etc dunno, and finally there - I guess - should be some msg on dbus03:01
DocScrutinizer05probably first location where such keypress shows up will be in syslog03:02
gregoaDocScrutinizer05: nothing in syslog when I press the button on the headset while playing a song in mediaplayer03:05
DocScrutinizer05indeed, button doesn't show up in syslog :-/03:10
DocScrutinizer05anyway you can end any arbitrary (GSM) call with that button03:11
DocScrutinizer05that is no new function and should still work03:11
DocScrutinizer05obviously my assumptions on what chain of subsystems detects and handles button been incorrect03:12
DocScrutinizer05or kernel simply doesn't log that event03:12
DocScrutinizer05you also should be able to accept inbound calls by pressing the button03:19
DocScrutinizer05no idea what else Pali thought of, for using the button function03:20
DocScrutinizer05if it's any sane it should be a dbus signal in the end anyway03:21
DocScrutinizer05or (pretty unlikely but possible) a /dev/input key event03:21
gregoaI'm not expecting any calls right now at this time of the day :)03:21
DocScrutinizer05sure, just mentioning it ;-)03:22
DocScrutinizer05primary concern anyway is that there are no regressions with new policy stuff, esp in audio but also in those two standard functions of the button03:23
DocScrutinizer05if it actually adds new functionality and if that functionality works as supposed is another level of verification03:24
*** taziff1 has joined #maemo-ssu03:25
DocScrutinizer05the most important part is phonecalls, via all 4 (5?) possible 'speakers'03:26
*** taziff has quit IRC03:26
DocScrutinizer05and of course checking mic function in each one as well03:26
DocScrutinizer05focus of course on wired headset, and transitions to/from headset to other operaqtion modes03:27
gregoaat least ordinary phone calls with the built-in mic continue to work. I'm afraid anything more advanced has to be tested by someone else :)03:28
DocScrutinizer05boot with headset plugged in and verify it works as supposed03:28
DocScrutinizer05hmm, yes. it's not exactly a sincle-case test scenario. That's why I been sceptical03:29
DocScrutinizer05about the amount of testing it has seen so far, and if that's sufficient to claim it's ready for primetime03:29
DocScrutinizer05one possible bug for example: plugging in headset during cal makes phone think button got pressed and thus disconnect call03:32
DocScrutinizer05same for unplugging03:32
DocScrutinizer05another one: booting with headset plugged in, the headset isn't correctly detected03:33
DocScrutinizer05that's the kind of tests we need for this policy stuff03:34
DocScrutinizer05background: mic and button are same wire on headset, so both functions are closely related03:38
DocScrutinizer05it's expected that mic ceases to record during button gets pressed. Everything else should work: plug in headset during call, unplug during call, etc pp03:39
DocScrutinizer05ooh, and AV video is same wire as well03:40
DocScrutinizer05so a call with AV cable plugged in shouldn't get auto-accepted nor eventually disconnected by Phone misreading AV cable as headset with button pressed03:42
DocScrutinizer05same for 3-pin headphones plugged in03:42
DocScrutinizer05it *should* use headphones and internal mic, I'd guess03:43
DocScrutinizer05this AV/headset and policy stuff is pretty complex03:44
