ssvbRST38h: One of the problems is that XV for some reason does not utilize a fast blizzard overlay when used with mplayer. It needs to be investigated if it is some configuration problem like colorkey, placement of the output window or whatever00:32
RST38hetrunko: You are not planning on changing from using mplayer executable to using libraries?00:32
etrunkoRST38h: a bit difficult for youtube files.00:32
RST38hssvb: you can just as well open dev/fb0 (dev/fb1 for YUV) and fornicate with blizzard as much as you want00:33
etrunkobtw, gstreamer now supports flv playback, at least on my desktop00:33
RST38hetrunko: well, they are just a specially compressed video00:33
ssvbRST38h: well, I know :)00:33
etrunkoRST38h: yeah. it would be a matter of packaging it and testing on the device00:33
ssvbRST38h: but canola uses XV for video output for embedding into a window00:33
RST38hetrunko: it should, flv support has probably been added to decoder libs by now00:34

bensonIt _is_ tempting.02:39
johnxheh. what's wrong is that MS didn't properly abstract their UI layer and so switching to a composited UI caused lots of problems. Though I honestly don't understand the insane memory usage02:39
lcukcurrent windowing GUIs are geared towards mouse and they work really well.  however when you get a touchscreen over 90% of the area is unusable and not touchable to the expected effect.  something like liqbase uses 99% of the screen for active interaction and lets you touch where you want.02:39

RST38hwazd: obviously, no argument here23:14
RST38hwazd: how many people will extend it is a different question though23:14
lardmanat least it lowers the bar23:14
RST38hlardman: for media players yes23:15
wazdnot like "gmplauncher for video, kmplayer for tv, mytube for youtube, canola for hooking" and so on :)23:15
lcukRST38h, better to have it as a library, that way we can have different interfaces to best suit the device its on, and still have the same high quality performance and expected behaviour23:15
qgilthese days I'm thinking about how captive are all we about "the past development history for nits"23:15
RST38hlardman: if you want to do anything else (simple sound recording, sound synthesis, video recording) you are still fucked.23:15
lardmanlol @ nits23:15
RST38hqgil: it is all we have to extrapolate from23:15
lardmanRST38h: the lib is only for the gui and interface stuff really, the rest is still gstreamer/openmax23:15
qgilwell, you can see trends out there23:15
lcukRST38h, i would rather have one point of failure for all movie stuff so a bug fix if required fixes it for everything23:16
RST38hlardman: everybody will be doing his own UI23:16
lardmanqgil: no, nits are things children get in their hair23:16
RST38hlardman: you have already seen MBox, Canola UKMP etc23:16
*** b-man has joined #maemo23:16
lardmanRST38h: yeah, this lib is the layer under the ui - playlists, linking together sources, etc23:16
RST38hlardman: UI is a vanity thing. If you are just writing plugins for somebody else's UI, there is much less ego massaging going on23:17
lardmanI'd prefer to write something someone will use, personally23:17
lardmanso plugins work for me23:17
wazdRST38h: well, not everybody is hunting for ego :)23:17
RST38hwazd: actually, everybody, in the OSS world23:17
RST38hwazd: if it is not money, it must be ego :)23:17
GAN800RST38h, just because it's the only one doesn't make it a good one. ;)23:17
wazdRST38h: me not :)23:17
wazdRST38h: I'm not genuine OSSer though :)23:18
lardmanRST38h: even if I am searching for kudos, I'd prefer it to be backend not upfront stuff23:18
RST38hwazd: But you are as kind as Mother Theresa!23:18
lcuklol @ lardman bein an ass man23:18
lardmanjust as that interests me23:18

RST38hlardman: Very few people are willing to work on the backend, even for money :)23:19
RST38htoo complicated, they say :)23:19
lcuksome surgeons promise to23:19
lardmanI don't like the airy-fairy front end stuff ;)23:19
qgilone potential advantage of plugins version your-own-whole-stuff is that (in principle) you save a lot of potential risk of buggy code in the lower levels23:19
lardmansays he drinking wine....23:20
* lcuk is a library man himself. i get a buzz using something ive made23:20
lardmanqgil: quite, building on the shoulders and all that stuff23:20
RST38hAnyways, I think that this media player API, just like most media APIs before it, will have limited use for developers, but will be used in about 4-6 products23:20
b-manlcuk: did you see my new rescue menu? :) http://www.bman.maemobox.org/projects/ubuntu-n8x0/Ubuntu-rescue-menu.jpg23:20
lardmanRST38h: perhaps, yes.23:20
lcukyes b-man, i love the chunky icons :)23:20
lardmanRST38h: but we live in hope :)23:20
b-manhehe23:20
RST38hqgil: And I also absolutely insist you have simple, non-glib based APIs for simple media tasks23:21
lcukRST38h, talk to the person implementing the very low level of this library23:21
RST38hqgil: stuff lke playing ring buffers, recording audio, getting frames from the camera23:21
lcukand see how they are talking to the hardware23:21
lcukand get it integrated23:21
qgilRST38h: well, at last will be useful for the official media player alone - and it has served the purpose also to open the backend that actually caused some of the annoyances that made (some) developers ask for openess23:21
brdusrOo never seen this before ... is this ubuntu on internet tablet @b-man =) ?23:21
RST38hqgil: yes, that is definitely true23:21
b-manbrdusr: yes :)23:22
lardmanwell if people will be able to add new stuff to the built in player - file support, transfer support, etc., then it will be worth it imho23:22
lcuki agree, at first glance it looks good23:22
RST38hlardman: you only want to add two things: codecs and transport protocols23:22
RST38hlardman: files are already provided by gnome vfs23:23
qgilit is also an easier path (for Nokia and the community) getting community plugins becoming part of the official offering23:23
RST38hlardman: visualization is cool, but it is not as important as previous 223:23
brdusrÔÔ ... cool !!! did you have any link for me to information about that? my google says nothing *g*23:23
* b-man grabs the link23:24

lardmanRST38h: so it abstracts some of the required but fairly constant components, and hopefully lets people concentrate on the cool bits23:39
lardmanRST38h: hopeully; we'll see23:39
RST38hlardman: well designed stuff always hides infrequently used stuff from the user, so it looks and feels simple23:39
r2d2rogersStskeeps: does it need any patching?23:39
RST38hlardman: do check the pdf23:39
Stskeepsr2d2rogers: possibly post-making it compile23:40
